Our Amateur Gun Dog Course introduces the fundamental skills from the gun dog training world while embracing a force-free approach. This course taps into your dog’s natural instincts, unlocking abilities in a way that focuses on positive reinforcement and mutual trust.

For those like me without a desire to go hunting or participate in gun sports, participants will develop valuable obedience skills such as reliable recall and lead walking, ideal for enhancing everyday interactions with your canine companion. Whether you aspire to refine your dog’s natural talents or simply wish to strengthen their manners and responsiveness, this course offers practical tools in a fun and engaging way.

While onward or more advanced lessons are available, they are not required.

If you prefer single one-on-one lessons, they are available at £30 each.

  • No, all you need is a dog that is a keen dog who loves a ball or toy!

  • The skills being covered are:

    • Hand retrieves

    • Memory Retrieves

    • Basic scent work

    • Heel training

    • Place Boards

    • Recalls

    • Emergency Stop

  • All of our lessons are held at our secure training paddock only 3 miles outside of Elgin.

    We have ample parking and toilets on site.

  • You only need to bring what you usually take on a walk (including high-value treats e.g. cooked chicken, liver treats, etc) and I will supply the rest.

    As we are positive only, we do not recommend the use of slip leads in class, so please make sure your dog has a neck collar/harness and a lead.

    Please do remember to dress appropriately as the Scottish weather can be erratic and it is an open space.

  • For 1-1 lessons you are welcome to bring multiple dogs from the same household although we do recommend bringing just one and applying the same techniques at home to all.


    Some clients prefer to have the first three lessons with the dog they find most challenging and bringing the rest along for the final lesson.

  • Each lesson is scheduled for an hour with 45-50 minutes making up the lesson with the remaining time for Q&A.

  • All the members of your household are welcome to participate in both 1-1 and group lessons!

    Children are to supervised at all times (or to remain on a lead for the duration of the lesson!)
